A pharmacy technicians work is to provide assistance to qualified pharmacists, within a pharmacy, in matter of: taking prescription requests, handling, counting and labeling tablets and bottles.

If the pharmacy they work in has no pharmacy aides, then they are supposed to perform other tasks, such as: answering the phone, organizing and stocking shelves, and even operating the cash register.

As I was saying earlier, a pharmacy technician work is to take prescription requests, but they can and may have to receive electronically sent prescriptions by various doctors. In some States they are even allowed to process prescription requests received by phone. It’s their obligation to verify that the prescriptions are complete and accurate. Sometimes pharmacy technicians have to prepare and process the prescriptions by themselves. For that they are required to mix, weigh, count, label and encase the nostrum in the right container. After a prescription is filled properly, the next step is to file, price and run it by the pharmacist. Only after that the prescription is given to the patient.
